Prrim by Adrian Sherriff, Satsuki Odamura & Tunji Beier

There is a marvellous timelessness to this music created by the Australian trio, Prrim. As a Western person in what often appears an increasingly dysfunctional society, I stop to take time out, close my eyes and let this music wash over me, invoking a deep and calming experience.

After only several seconds of the bass trombone and koto introductions, I am instantly transported into another sphere. Sherriff’s music seductively weaves together South Indian, Japanese, Indonesian and Western improvisation into a rich tapestry that informs and enriches his uniquely Australian compositional and improvisational language.

Beneath the exquisite sounds of flutes, shakuhachi, strings, drums, bells and bowls, blooms the beautifully crafted syncopated sonority of Sherriff's bass trombone. His trombone orchestrates and then propels forward his companions, koto player Satsuki Odamura and percussionist Tunji Beier in ethereal togetherness. Amongst the nine pieces on the album, I’m most deeply touched by the tracks: 'Autumn Rain Prelude', 'Chak Dingu Dhin' and 'Sunrise in Mylapore'.

A word meaning ‘spring’ or ‘native well’, Prrim is the name adopted by three exceptional Australian musicians: Adrian Sherriff on brass, flutes, Satsuki Odamura on koto and Tunji Beier on percussion.
While the name of the group comes from the Wemba-Wemba people of Western Victoria, the music casts a wide net, encompassing music from across the world, including: South India, Japan and Indonesia.
