Patchworked Paperclips from Bradelaide by Z is for Zilla
Life has moved on. By this stage I'm 25 or 26, living in Asia, barely married or engaged but have no interest in planning a wedding. Late one night I get a message from Bradelaide. He is planning a trip to south east Asia and wants to visit me. We message one another frequently. This time we text and call, too. The messages are intense and dangerous. He knows I'm not single. It plagues him. I reassure him. It becomes obvious that we will never be a real couple, just a fantasy that exists when we create it. He lets me indulge anyway but I feel him slip away, like some ship into the night.
That's when I write the Patchworked series, and the song, Patchworked Paperclips itself, which is the original version of the song, Because All Romantics are Quitters by We Wanted To Be The Sky. The band version directly quotes something Bradelaide said to me one night - "You were the one I should have stood still for". I couldn't think of a better way to memorialize that beautiful and haunting sentiment than to write a song like Patchworked/BARAQ . It's his forever. No one can take that from us. No one can take it from him.
