The Call by Ignaz Schick's Decollage 3

"Decollage 3 performed their first concert in late October 1995 in Munich on occasion of Don Cherry's passing. A memorial concert for which Ignaz called this group and organized an event to take farewell from his mentor, master and friend. The concert took place in painter Jon Groom's Praterinsel studio. Schick selected compositions from the different styles the trumpeter had been involved – from as early as the 1959 period with Ornette all the way up via the middle and late phases with repertoire Cherry used in Codona or Multikulti. Before this (the concert was intended as a personal event that in the end was attended by a surprisingly big crowd and which lead to a first CD release "Lonely Woman") the group had already met once for a purely "free improvised" rehearsal session in spring/summer 1995. Decollage 3 was conceived as a group that could shift from free improvisation via complex written originals to jazz classics from the Ornette Coleman, Thelonius Monk, Albert Ayler or Don Cherry song books. From 1995 until around 2002 the trio rehearsed and performed frequently original repertoire by Schick. With Georg Janker he had found an ideal partner harmonizing and counterpointing his odd third stream like suites and with Sunk Pöschl the perfect drummer being able to easily switch between a field of pulses to tight and hard swinging rhythm. The music of this album marks the first recording in which the trio dropped composed material and returned to free improvisation. You can still hear the amazing sensitivity + interplay the group had achieved while working on written material, in fact many sections sound like composed, but non of the material you hear was pre-arranged. Shortly after this recording public appearances of the group became more rare due to different obligations of the members, lacking concert opportunities and the physical distance between the players living in Berlin and Munich. Schick still occasionally collaborates in different constellations with both Janker and Pöschl, but the trio in the meantime has been replaced by other acoustic formations. The music was played exactly in the order it is presented here without any editing or cuts. Each piece pays tribute to a different mentor and/or early idol of Schick."

Ignaz Schick is a Berlin based sound artist, composer & visual artist. He performs as instrumentalist on turntables, objects, sampler, live-electronics, alto saxophone & flutes. He has collaborated with with Mwata Bowden, Don Cherry, Douglas Ewart, Sven-Ake Johansson, George Lewis, Paul Lovens, Toshimaru Nakamura, Charlemagne Palestine, Andrea Parkins, Keith Rowe, Akira Sakata or Martin Tetréault.
