THE SON! by ANNABEL LEE

I wrote this song from the perspective of a cult leader to his brain-dead disciples. We are in an extremely violent time in history. Obviously. It's impossible to even grapple with most of what is happening, even just in the city that I live in. The idea that the cults people join (political parties alike), or the idols we choose to follow, we ultimately embody them and become everything they are. The first verse of this song is about how the physical transformation occurs first- maybe the red hat or the hood...- The second verse is about how once somebody is indoctrinated they are actually the ones doing all of the work- and finally, even when the leader admits that he is exploiting and using his followers as shields and pawns, he knows that they are too loyal to stray. Empty promises and an unshakeable god complex. This is the first of many songs from my sophomore album commenting on where we are at.

Annabel Lee is a Los Angeles rock and roll artist known for her unhinged stage persona and “high octane” (Earmilk) vocals. Getting her start performing at hardcore shows around New England, Annabel brings that kind of unbridled energy to her shows, where everyone is on the cusp of losing their shit while also bringing senstitivity and tenderness with her heavy, imagistic lyricism.
