Forgotten Creatures from Nuclear Winter by Ydintalvi

The distance proves further than I thought. I cover leagues on foot, but the tower on the horizon doesn't grow a bit. Doesn't seem nearer. All around I see ruin. Tall cinders for trees, half-buried skeletons for creatures. I meet none save for a few... odd beings. They cower, convulse, peek, twitch, hide. What are they? All around me, creatures once thriving are dead, disfigured... These seem to have survived, maimed and diseased. What a price to pay. And for what? I don't recognize any of them - as if they were alien. They have been alienated from what they once were. Much like myself, I think.
