Long before there was writing, cities, or organized religions, people made music. Prehistoric song and sound are among humanity's oldest forms of cultural expression. They served not only as entertainment but also played a central role in the social, spiritual, and communicative lives of our ancestors.

Prehistoric song was probably not initially a "song" in the modern sense, but rather a free, emotional vocalization. These sounds may have served to express feelings, coordinate groups, or accompany rituals. Some researchers even suspect that singing was a precursor to language—or at least closely linked to its development.

For prehistoric people, sound was not just entertainment but also a means of connecting with nature and the supernatural. In caves such as the Grotte de Niaux or Chauvet in France, paintings were often placed in locations with particularly good acoustics—an indication that rituals involving sound and song took place there. Some theories suggest that such caves served as "sound rooms"—a kind of prehistoric temple or theater.

Prehistoric song and sound were more than just early forms of music: They were fundamental components of human development – biologically, socially, and culturally. Even though we will never know exactly what these songs sounded like, I am sure that we still have an access to this: in ourselves, in the preconscious, disguised by many civilizational layers. We just have to get on our way and become pathfinders again.
