Le Nord, A Nordic Statement in Sound and Vision
Long associated with a dense, “hypothermic” drone aesthetic, Wapstan here reveals a more structured and synth-driven approach. Conceived as a suite of 7 compositions, Le Nord draws explicitly on early electronic and minimalist music, allowing melodic and harmonic elements to surface with newfound clarity. While the album tempers the monolithic weight of previous releases, it remains grounded in the stark, glacial atmosphere that defines the project for decades.
The album also marks Sasseville’s 25th year as a noise artist, serving as both a retrospective gesture and a renewed artistic statement. Nordic imagery—central to Wapstan’s identity—extends beyond the music into the visual dimension. The release is accompanied by a four-panel collage depicting a vast cosmic Northern landscape, inspired in part by classic engraving, representing one of Sasseville’s most elaborate visual works to date.
Mastered by Montréal sound artist Dominic Jasmin, whose prior collaborations with Sasseville have shaped the raw sonic force of En Fer, Le Nord stands as a refined yet uncompromising addition to Wapstan’s body of work.
