Wunderkind from Silent Thunder by Volker Goetze / Christian Torkewitz

"Wunderkind" is a dedication to my trumpet teacher Markus Stockhausen. Markus' ease of making music on a brass instrument is stunning in many ways - he is a real natural talent. The composition is inspired by Eric Satie and African or Latin rhythm and is based on a three-bar form. The harmonies avoid the third in the chords - the overtones of every note played contain the natural third. The piece avoids typical jazz chords and is based on simplification. An interlude separates the two solo sections. Here and there I play a few African Fulani flute melodies or Kora embellishments. Christian Torkewitz's piano playing expanded into the Afro-Cuban rhythm world due to his experience as a multi-instrumentalist. It is a repetitive, simple, playful song: the "young child - 'Markus Stockhausen' in the sandpit of the trumpet world" - with more Africa and New York influences.
