Coot
The only son of an only son gonna
Be the last leaf on the family tree
He kept to himself and he looked at the world indifferently
With a savage eye and a scornful grin
He'd say death ain't gonna get the best of him
He'd close his fist against a charming word
Six months to a year's what the doctor said
Gonna walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Indifferently
The only son of an only son
He always said this day would come
Son of a gun
He's gonna meet his maker face to face
Look him in the eye and give his hand a shake
And he reckoned now was as good a time as any
Took a last look around the old home place
And the picture of his mother by the fireplace
Took a kerosene lamp and he poured it all around
Put on a clean white shirt and his Sunday coat
Struck a match on his shoe and he lit his smoke
Then he dropped the match and he set his home ablaze
Took a shovel and a bible and a shotgun too
Some rotgut whiskey and his old dog Blue
And he set out for the oak tree on the hill
He dug a hole on the sunny side
It was six feet deep and three feet wide
He dug a hole on the sunny side
He leaned the shovel up against the tree
And he wiped his brow and took a shot a whiskey
Then he took out his knife and he scratched an epitaph
He carved his words in the old oak tree
it said "here lies me; born in '33
I lived a life; now I'm dead."
Took a shot of the whiskey gave a bone to Blue
Said "Boy, I'm gonna save a place for you
And ol' Blue looked at him…Indifferently
He finished off the bottle and cigar too
And said "Blue, I'm gonna save a place for you."
Then he read a few words from the Book of Revelation
He lay down with the worms
and then he put the shotgun against his head and said,
"So long Blue; so long Blue."
The gunshot echoed across the hills
And the birds took flight from the windowsills
And the horses pawed the ground uneasily
Then the sky came open with a blinding light
Then it all got quiet like church at night
And a thunder clapped and a gentle rain began
Old blue dropped the bone in his master's grave
Then he filled the hole and he lifted his leg
And old Blue walked away…indifferently
The only son of an only son
He always knew this day would come
The only son of an only son
Son of a gun
