Gauze [VHT85] by Le Mal

Last but certainly not least in our Halloween lineup, I am so pleased and honored to present VHT85, the recently-released (as of October 19th) ‘Gauze’ EP by Phoenix, Arizona’s Le Mal, whose French name translates appropriately to ‘evil.’
Precipitated by the haunting Christmas-song-gone-wrong single ‘Red Maple Door,’ their debut EP is a remarkable display of gothic style - seven spells which uniquely channel a different aspect of what Le Mal is all about. To be sure, the urgent vocals, primal electronic drums, and staccato synth lines sound welcomingly like something out of the early Sisters of Mercy catalog tinged with modern-day darkwave along the lines of Whispering Sons or Double Echo. But there are also delightfully lush and ethereal soundscapes which feature airily throughout, lending themselves to a dark dreampop feel, like wandering through a twilit waking dream. ‘Gauze’ sounds and feels exactly like its name - light, fragile, elegant - but made antique, ghostly, and threateningly obscure. ‘Gauze’ is the shroud enveloping the corpse, and we are not sure whether it will lie quietly in its casket should we turn away. Masterful, enchanting, and full of hints of what’s to come. Please give Le Mal the warmest welcome this Samhain with the lifting of the veil…
