Presenting VHT05 - COAGULATION 🩸🌊

A delightful experiment in 80s-inspired darkwave electroclash hauntological music from @retrograth (Stockholm, Sweden) about which I am quite sure Mark Fisher and Jacques Derrida would have reams to say.
This album was inspired by a trip to the Black Sea and observing the looming plastic islands littering the seascape.
The album is about plastic, and pollution. But more deeply, it is about the promise of a modernist dream, a promise that we and our parents and their parents went all-in on, and it is a promise that has failed. It leaves us haunted by the ghosts of a lost future - sleek spires, clean energy, hoverboards, teleportation - fully automated luxury gay space communism.
Music has long explored the hauntological, and that has perhaps never been more true with the revival of 80s nostalgia.
So I hope as you explore this piece of work that you might stop for a moment to reflect on what was promised, on what failed to deliver, and what defiant refusal means - a refusal to give up the ghost of the future.

“The EP COAGULATION revolves around plastics and dreams of the future. That was before we were made aware of the plastic pollution. It all became clear one summer evening during a swim in the Black Sea - big piles of plastic rubbish were floating around, polluting the seawater and the nearby rocky beaches with detritus, underscoring a blighted future of dashed hopes and broken promises.”
