Oxford/London indie band Vernons Future return with new single Steerpike, a ripe slice of gothic disco, channelling their inner-Poldark and putting Mervyn Peake’s classic Gormenghast books to uses we’re pretty sure Merv didn’t envisage. This Steerpike is a 4/4 march along a beautiful and brutal windswept shoreline while doing battle with one’s inner demons - a sunny stroll along the prom it’s not...
Frontman Simon Burchill says of Steerpike: “The song grew out of a groove that we really liked, and arrived pretty much fully formed in terms of the music. The lyrics are taken from Mervyn Peake’s epic Gormenghast Trilogy - they popped into my head as we played, dredged up from decades ago, and fitted perfectly. Steerpike is definitely anti-hero rather than hero - highly intelligent, ruthless, and willing to justify any means to reach his end...”
Steerpike is Vernons Future’s first all-new release since 2022 and is available to stream from Friday 5 April 2024 with an accompanying video released simultaneously. The band will celebrate with a gig at The Spice of Life, Soho on Saturday 4 May, their first gig in London since two high-profile support slots at Islington’s O2 Academy in Autumn 2023.
