I have recently reintroduced cats into my life after a very, very long time with no pets at all. It has been a decidedly wonderful and enriching decision, and has shown a warm light on parts of my heart long scabbed over.
To be able to make a meaningful connection with an other being, to be responsible for its livelihood, to have splendid and lovely little moments of fun, affection, and just vibing kitty-style, has fostered a blossoming within my soul. I've subsequently been so touched and enamored with my kitties that I felt compelled to translate and refract that joy into music.
By virtue of my school days, I encountered and enjoyed the poem by Christopher Smart and the music set by Britten, and have always fancied undertaking an homage to it. I now am deeply fortunate to have kitties to be the subjects of such a project, and feel such deep and eternal love for them to wish to immortalize them in song.
If nothing else, a welcome respite from the usual existential dread and Doomerism I often traffic in, and a balm for weary souls. I hope that while specific to my experience, that this collection of little odes will still provide an enjoyable listen.
