Tryptych I by TrypCat
A collection of thoughts-set-to-sound, something akin to music. Exasperated ramblings organically channeled through acoustic and electric instruments filtered further through a haze of distortion and delay.
The band, TrypCat, is really just me and although I think there are others out there that may appreciate what I do, perhaps even enjoy it, I do it really just for me. The songs are more or less one-man improvisational jams using whatever is on hand to best convey and make sense of the noise going on in my head. I like to work fast, inspired by the moment. Most tracks that comprise a song are laid down in 2-3 takes, but usually just one.
The starting point for a song may be a thought, a bass line, a bus passing, a percussion segment or snippet of a sound to which layer upon layer, track upon track, is added until it feels ‘right.’ Sometimes four tracks are enough; sometimes it takes 18-20. The length varies as well—could be a 4 minute song, might be a 30-minute jam. I just won’t know until it’s done.
Lyrics are either taken from pages of scrap paper, dribbled in ink scribbles or plucked from the thinning hair of my subconscious. The music and words meld to elicit a darker mood or emotion more so than they are created to satisfy a happy, verse/chorus/verse pop song of love. I just don’t have it in me to write the love song. Love, an emotion so easily written about, and I can’t grasp it. Well, I can. But I mean true love. Not boy-meets-girl, girl crushes boy's soul and he must express that romantic heartbreak in song.
Human emotion encompasses much more than that one feeling and I tap into these other emotions–feelings of anxiety, despair, cynicism, and absurdity—more readily than I do those of a happy nature.
Fairies, fair maidens, serial killers, incestuous siblings, on the lam outlaws, corporate moneymongers, gods, religion and the seven deadly sins are all likely to make an appearance within the lines of verses uttered.
I find the entire process cathartic, and this is why I do it.
