« Tu avais tellement peur de la mort, tu en parlais souvent… souvent avec lucidité, avec raison, mais cette crainte disparaissait bien vite lorsque tu t’asseyais au piano… Là, les démons s’évanouissaient, Les fantômes disparaissaient, la beauté s’installait… Ton piano, tu le caressais depuis si longtemps, à peine sorti de l’adolescence. En 1975, à Nancy, tu avais déployé près de cent pieds pour jouer ta musique, cette "Septober Energy", l’énergie que l’on a à 28 ans, et déjà l’expérience des grands…
Plus récemment, on se retrouve dans les Pouilles avec tes amis italiens : Roberto Ottaviano, Riccardo Bergerone, Pino Minafra. Et ton frère, Bra Louis… et Julie… entre-temps, nous nous étions enfermés pour enregistrer ce qui deviendra l’Étau. Moi, j’écoutais, je fermais les yeux, ou je te regardais, ton visage, tes mains, cette élégance feutrée et cette poésie inégalable, ce rayonnement chaleureux inscrit dans une concentration extrême. "L’épatant Tippett" avait titré un journal au sujet d’un concert de Tapestry… C’était juste. Tu étais venu à Châtenay-Malabry suite à ma demande, tu avais gentiment accepté après une très courte hésitation, ne connaissant du quartet proposé que ton autre compère de Mujician, Paul Rogers. Michel Pilz et Jean Noël Cognard, le maître de cérémonie, t’étaient apparemment étrangers, en tout cas tu n’avais jamais joué avec eux deux. Mais l’entente fut immédiate. Écoutez "Premiers rôles", un duo parfait. Avec humilité, tu insistais auprès de Jean Noël pour qu’il décide qui jouait avec qui, te pliant avec ce flegme légendaire à ses décisions… je t’avais demandé s’il était possible d’inclure un morceau de ces musiciens sud-africains exilés à Londres. Tu avais choisi "Sonia", puis t’étais ravisé pour finalement jouer le thème de "You Ain’t Gonna Know Me Cos You Think You Know Me", du même Mongesi Feza. Michel ne connaissait pas, alors tu as sorti un crayon, une portée musicale et tu lui as griffonné les notes…Je me souviens aussi d’une de tes phrases : "tout ce que l’on joue doit être enregistré et publié". Ne rien perdre, ne rien gâcher, voilà l’un des principes fondamentaux de la musique improvisée. Parce rien ne sera jamais identique, l’instant fugace ne se renouvellera pas. Alors, grâce à Jean Noël et son complice Patrick Müller, voici gravé ce qui n’a pu l’être dans le coffret "Choses clandestines", déjà bien consistant. Ce ne sont pas des "chutes", bien loin de là, mais un bel hommage que l’on peut rendre à cet homme incomparable, que j’ai eu l’honneur de côtoyer à plusieurs reprises et qui a marqué ma vie d’amateur à tout jamais. You had come to Châtenay-Malabry following my request, you had kindly accepted after a very short hesitation, knowing of the proposed quartet only your other friend of Mujician, Paul Rogers. Michel Pilz and Jean Noël Cognard, the master of ceremonies, were apparently strangers to you, in any case you had never played with them both. But the agreement was immediate. Listen to « Premiers Rôles", a perfect duet. With humility, you insisted with Jean Noël so that he decides who played with whom, bending with this legendary phlegm to his decisions… I asked you if it was possible to include a piece of these South African musicians exiles in London. You chose "Sonia", then changed your mind to finally play the theme of "You Ain’t Gonna Know Me Cos You Think You Know Me", by the same Mongesi Feza. Michel didn't know it, so you took out a pencil, a musical staff and you scribbled the notes for him… I also remember one of your sentences: "everything we play must be recorded and published". Not to lose anything, not to spoil anything, this is one of the fundamental principles of improvised music. Because nothing will ever be the same, the fleeting moment will not be repeated. So, thanks to Jean Noël and his accomplice Patrick Müller, here is engraved what could not be in the box "Clandestines", already quite substantial. These are not « drops", far from it, but a beautiful tribute that we can pay to this incomparable man, whom I had the honor to meet on several occasions and who marked my life as an amateur forever.
