Govinda by TOY PIANO
This is Installment 024 of the MAXIMUM MUSIC CAMPAIGN.
"Govinda" is a traditional Indian devotional song based on what is said to be the world's first poem, consisting of prayers believed to have been spoken by Brahma glorifying Krishna. This rendition is partially based on the 1970 recording by The Radha Krsna Temple, produced by George Harrison and released on the Beatles' Apple label.
I found myself obsessed last year with the entire Radha Krsna Temple album in the summer of 2023 enough to frequently put it on before turning in for the night. The recent passing of Dicks frontman Gary Floyd (who I had been acquainted with thanks to both Mike Watt and Tim "Napalm" Stegall), who was a practicioner of Hindu spirituality, led me to revisit the album again and to decide to do an arrangement of "Govinda" in the usual Toy Piano style and dedicate it to the memory of the man many a fan of punk rock referred to as Uncle Gary.
