Monotone Symphony by Toxitown
The Monotone Symphony was a revolution when it debuted in 1960, becoming a juggernaut of minimalist sound art. Toxitown seeks to explore Yves Klein's symphony through a new lens: synthetic and ephemeral.
The original (and only) performance of the Monotone Symphony in Klein's lifetime consisted of a ten piece orchestra, not to mention the several nude models. Toxitown's rendition features instead three separate synthesizers overlayed: two synth pads and one violin.
The first movement consists of a single sustained D major chord. The second movement contains only silence.
Following performances of Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting in a Room and John Cage's 4'33, Monotone Symphony sits comfortable among Toxitown's more experimental (and reverential) works.
