What remains afterwards?
Traces of the summer, of the fall.
Traces of lives that have changed, and people we miss.
Ashes, footprints, letters, leaves... markers of time passing and reminders of how fragile and fleeting the now is.

I find myself looking at the guitars that hang quietly in the house while my older son is away at college. I remember so clearly the time we sat on his bed sixteen years ago when he asked me why things had to change.

I'm still working on the full answer, but I know better now that we get to make a life in response to what remains from the past. Those micro-moments, passing glances, half-smiles, deep or momentary feelings of joy or hopelessness... all the traces of what came before can help us shape the now and the future if we're listening.
