A tribute to composer Harold Budd.
"The Pearl," an album Harold made with Brian Eno, has always been a favorite of mine... and one of the things I particularly love about it is that the songs don't seem to care much about leading the listener anywhere. Listening to the album is like walking through a series of rooms in a museum in which things are already going on when you arrive, and your presence is not necessarily a part of the proceedings.
It's liberating to play this way... creating a space and environment without feeling the need for a narrative through-line, or for an arc of story to move things along. There are no external forces at play in this kind of music... it has its own logic and a kind of self-sufficiency that I find hypnotic.
The other benefit of this kind of music is that as it fades out it gives the impression that it goes on forever, slowly moving into the distance away from where you happen to be. The room remains after you leave, and is always there when you want to visit it.
These are the gifts Harold left behind... so many places to visit, each of them eternal. I hope this small love letter to his music reaches him out there somewhere...deep in its own fade.
