In August of 2014 while on a bus home, I read an article by Nick Turse in The Nation entitled, “Why are 50,000 Sudanese Children on the Brink of Death?” The article discussed the increasingly devastating humanitarian situation in the South Sudan, the escalating civil war there, and the United States government’s failure to agree upon something even remotely resembling a peaceful conclusion. Once envisioned to be America’s greatest nation building achievement, the South Sudan has devolved into one of the bloodiest regions in the world. Thousands starve while war escalates and American politicians run out of rhetoric. I began to think of South Sudan like a flower that has been improperly cultivated and is rotting at the roots politically, socially, economically, etc. Like the neglected flower, the situation in South Sudan is unknown to virtually all Americans.
To Dust formed as a project in the latter part of 2013 with the intention of making the most ferocious, intense, and menacing extreme music possible. Having spent their time in various death metal, grindcore, and hardcore bands over the years, To Dust fuse contemporary and classic underground influences to create a sound intended to shatter your eardrums and bang your head into oblivion.
