Houmaïssa by TisDass

TisDass is the band of frontman singer-guitarist Moussa Kildjate Albadé. Based in Niamey and originally from Tchinntabarade, an emblematic town of the Kel Tamasheq people in central Niger. The band's name means "Pillars" in the Tamasheq language and refers to the pillars of the traditional Berber tents used for shelter in the Sahel desert. This name symbolizes a strong attachment to a culture that TisDass intends to defend and promote through the power of music. Growing up to the sounds of Tinariwen, Bob Marley, and Dire Straits, which Moussa’s father listened to, the desire to fight with words and guitars came after a traumatic experience in his early life. As a child, he witnessed the slaughter of part of his family by the country's army during the Tamasheq revolution. He understood that weapons only brought misfortune and, like the pioneers of Tuareg blues, he learned the guitar and wrote songs in order to make peace and independence possible for his people. Their latest album « Houmaïssa » is an ode to the role of women in Tamasheq society and a celebration of their power and resilience throughout the ages. The album is available on vinyl and cd.
