Cast Offs by Captain Seam'n and The Unsinkables

Cast Offs: The Lost Low Quality Album.

This album reveals a band being in transition and finally disintegrating represented by the album art of the three pirates seeking out separate horizons. Some being left over tracks from the Drink Umbungo sessions from which Going Off Inside of You (on Spontaneous Sea Shanties and Fish Funk) and Lonely Leprechaun were the only actually tracks in amongst jamming and psychedelic stuff (Trippy Tales Tribal, although Tavern of Life had the lads’ usual chatter).

Then Jaco stopped showing for sessions which meant Captain and Oscar would record as a duo(Get Down low, Ocean). Following the Halloween sessions which created Cocks and Throbbers (and was perceived by the lads as a reunion) the lads weren’t getting on as a threesome but did still manage to produce Down Dirty Night, Cactus Alcohol, Deviant and Lost, Cold as Ice. Jacobiah then disappeared in a rumoured Police sting with a taser – “well it hurt, nothing like that should go up there!”. Oscar and Captain decided to continue with the sessions led by Jolly Roger (“Don’t worry about the quality, it’s lo-fi innit, it’s in at the moment!” and they produced the tracks 'I am the Mermaid King', 'I Can Do Anything', 'Seas of Devastation', 'Just Another B-Side' and 'Not Bitter at All'. Then Oscar and Captain were separated on a night out on the boat with Oscar becoming stranded on a mermaid inhabited island and Captain setting off in search of his underwater zombie lover, penning a variety of tragic poems about longing, searching and yearning which he hopes to one day set to country music.

Then one day Oscar and Captain were reunited and getting back in the studio and putting all fall outs aside (money etc. as hinted on Cocks and Throbbers) they reunited with Jolly Roger Bumhole (who incidentally can be heard asking for a bit of decorum at the start of 'You're a Cock!') to produce some more noodly bollocks. Halfway through these sessions Jaco returned, but they only managed a few tracks together (You’re a Cock, Farty Poo, I followed Through and the final and ironically/aptly titled Things Fall Apart Sometimes before all four went their separate ways and the Unsinkables were no more. Until a chance encounter saw Captain and Oscar reuniting with the intention of writing another story which resulted in The Notables EP which is separate from this release (and may be included with a code rather than released properly).

When going through all the recordings for the 5 and 10 year celebration reissues it occurred to Oscar when compiling the last album Scraping the Barrel that there was a lost album of Unsinkables material which documented Captain Seam’n and the Unsinkables at the tail end of their tenure as a band. Although it felt like Cocks and Throbbers was the last album proper (and in a way it was really) there was a lot of material recorded during and after those sessions that deserved a separate release to honour the period of a band when it is still going well, then to choppy waters, struggling whilst missing a member, awkward reunions, well-intentioned reunions without a member, to a band no longer existing at all.

So here we have the very last and until now lost album Cast Offs ('That Island of Something Special' will be released soon but that isn't a music album).

The track 'Thruppence and Tuppence or Slipping in and out (of Character)' is an early recording of the lads discussing the play and other gibberish whilst slippin in and out of character, an early recording that captures us at that time, quite a nice memory really.


Oscar's highlights: 'Not Bitter At All' is a great track once you get past the lo-fi recording, 'Dance All Night' is interesting as it was a written track for 'That Island of Something Special' radio play (in fact the only written track for the entire Unsinkables era the rest were spontaneous).
