Search History by The New Birds of America

A concept record of poppy and programmatic instrumentals featuring vintage synth sounds. A companion of sorts to the more sixties inflected and organ forward "At Sea", similarly an outgrowth of some both restless and relaxing musical productivity in the context of uncertainty.

These songs reflect on the avowedly progressive, occasionally utopian, modernist and futurist narratives associated in the 1970s and 1980s with the environs often designated as Toronto, Ontario and Canada. The tracks are conceptualized as an LP in which tracks 1-5 are Side One and tracks 6-11, Side Two.

The initial spark was discovering the music of Frank Maston. See notes on the first track. From there, I reconnected with some song fragments and started writing with longtime musical loves in mind, especially: Paddy Kingsland, John Mills-Cockell, Peter Howell, Dudley Simpson, Delia Derbyshire, Ron Grainger, Barry Gray, Derek Wadsworth, Paul Baillargeon, and Milan Kymlicka. And, always: Michel Legrand.
