Lyrics
I awoke with a start on Christmas Eve
Floorboards rumblin’ beneath my feet
A sound from downstairs, like Christmas songs
And someone's down there singing along
Gingerly I climbed out of my bed
and tip-toed down step by step
At the foot of the staircase, through the open door
I saw a mysterious shadow dancing on the wall
Jumping up and down, arms waving around
With tree lights flashin’ and the music so loud
Windows were rattlin' to the Christmas tunes
As I took a sneak-peak into the room
By the record player was a figure I knew
A fat old fella in a bright red suit
It was Santa dancing with a smile so wide
He looked to me with a tear in his eye
saying “my oh my, I just can’t believe
that they wrote all these great songs for me!”
As he put on another festive 45
Said “this one’s an old favourite of mine”
Then he held out his hand and asked with glee
"May I have this dance on Christmas eve?"
I awoke with a start on Christmas day
Out on the couch, too much dreaming again
I looked at my records scattered around the room
And heard the gentle clicking of the run-out groove
When something caught my eye under the Christmas tree
Red and white wrapping on a new LP
And on it a note, signed with a great big kiss
said “please can we dance again next Christmas?”
