Perpetual Survival is the latest release from Winnipeg hip hop mainstays Yy and The Gumshoe Strut. Returning as Turn The Gun, the duo have crafted a concept album that speaks volumes about the cyclical journey of struggle and enlightenment.
Over a decade and a half since the release of their previous Turn The Gun album, Yy and Gumshoe put their experience on full display as they weave through a cohesive head nodding collection songs that are both reflective and relatable. The tone of the album is set by songs like Perpetual Survival Mode and Head Down & Go, while Stress Leave and Stress Expert perfectly encapsulate the trajectory of the albums content. Sandwiched in the album are tracks like Hillbilly Reckoning and Ally (the lead single) where social commentary takes centre stage by challenging issues around race and ignorance towards marginalized groups. The album ends on the upswing with We Run All The Way, where Yy and Gumshoe hit full stride with a showcase of skill and confidence.
