Lyrics
Running on the steel road,
Pavements of platforms I know.
Tall grass either side of the tracks.
What becomes of us all;
Growing up and growing old.
Cold glass, on my neck and my back.
I’m riding the midnight train,
Heading home once again.
And I see people, the young and the old.
I see all ages, and they all hold,
Each other’s hands for warmth.
Across from me some middle-aged men,
Drunk on wine and burger king.
Together for the first time in years again.
Behind me, a family of four.
Tired parents but the kids exhausted more,
Asleep now, wildlings quieter than gentlest wind.
I’m riding the midnight train,
Heading home once again.
And I see people, the young and the old.
I see all ages, and they all hold,
Each other’s hands for warmth.
A loner, mysterious boy.
Self-esteem all destroyed,
Fretful and watching for his leave.
And I see two teenage girls,
Maybe nineteen years old or so,
Passed out, lying down on the seats.
I’m riding the midnight train,
Heading home once again.
And I see people, the young and the old.
I see all ages, and they all hold,
Each other’s hands for warmth.
I'm riding the midnight train.
Running on the steel road,
Pavements of platforms I know.
Tall grass either side of the tracks.
I’m riding the midnight train,
Heading home once again.
And I see people, the young and the old.
I see all ages, and they all hold,
Each other’s hands for warmth.
