Minor Leagues by Teenage Art Scene

The story of most Teenage Art Scene albums start with the album before and Minor Leagues is no different. This album was written and mainly recorded at the same time as Pipes on the Inside. I cannot write consistently in one style or mood, so as I was writing the more electronic and pop influenced Pipes on the Inside, I kept writing songs that were the opposite of that album. The results of this is Minor Leagues. Minor Leagues is a sister album to Pipes on the Inside but it is almost the polar opposite. Where Pipes on the Inside was bright and bold, Minor Leagues is dark and introspective. These songs are the result of my attempt at embracing honestly in songwriting. Even if specific lyrics are not factually correct to my life or are utterly nonsensical (as are the case for most of my lyrics), they all stem from experiences and emotions that are real. When I think back some of the older songs on the album like the title track and Broad Strokes, I realize that as of writing this those songs are 2 years old. Over the process of recording this album I started university and have grown immensely as a person. These songs are preserved fragments of me and my experiences over this time of unprecedented change. I guess that Minor leagues means the wider word within the context of this album and being “ready for the minor leagues” meant stepping into the word of the indie and underground music scene. No one that isn’t looking knows that it’s there (they are operating in the major leagues.) But for those who are in the know, it’s an engulfing universe. With this album I am “ready for the minor leagues”.

Teenage Art Scene is a Victoria based solo power-pop project led by Rupert Yakelashek. The band grinds glitchy, fuzzed-out lead guitars into hooky melodies to create a distinct sonic palette adorned with slacker-rock vocals.
