This song is really important to me, the song I sampled for it even more so. I discovered Linda Perhacs right after high school when pitchfork ran an article about her coming back to music. She was having a resurgence a boil over of a cult following that’d been growing since the 60’s one that she had little to no knowledge of until 44 years later. I love that whole album but being young, black and from a bit of a broken home, a fuck up and an outcast, who cares always stuck with me the most. The usual mantra for a lot of us is the response to ‘I can’t complain’: who’s gonna listen anyway? For my dad it was ‘no blood no foul’. So who cares? As we twist further in the age of spin, watching the slow motion fall of an empire, information and disinformation overload, the potential death of the planet, disease, violence war and genocide. Problems all of us have been aware of since we were kids. I pose the question again, Who Cares? The question makes me not even want to make any type of Art or do much of anything at all. But even if no one cares, even if I don’t want to care, the truth is I’ve spent over a decade trying to escape giving a fuck. But I’ve been lying to myself for years. I care and I hate it. I’m not even mad at you if you don’t. But whether you do or not I need to tell my story on this little blue rock spinning into oblivion. Because at the very least I need to care about myself. I haven’t for a very long time.
