Churulian is the experimental project of Aniruddha Das, a musician and producer of Indian origin, born and brought up in London. He is better known as “Dr Das,” bassist and co-founder of Asian Dub Foundation. His interest in various forms of experimental music pre-dates his involvement with dub. Whilst an art student in the 1980s, he used to create tape loops of non-metric rhythm and ambient noise using 2-track tape and mono cassette machines and found metal objects. Over the last 2 years, as “Churulian,” he has been manipulating small fragments of sound to reveal their ‘inner architecture,’ creating often unexpected, pulsating soundscapes. He has evolved a sci-fi mythology to accompany this work: “Churulians are nomadic aliens who recycle inter-galactic sonic waste, and use this material to create pieces that are coded commentaries on the communities they encounter.”
