Following a several month hiatus, Symbols returns on December 21 with the release of Origami Girl’s Spirit Bomb, the Japanese artist’s label debut and a follow-up to albums on Collapsed Structures, Hellscape and PLUS100. Building out from her previous work, Spirit Bomb features a fragmented take on eskibeat grime and classic video game music, throwing both into a blender at breakneck pace while pulling out eccentric fragments of groove and noise.
With grime’s building blocks and a series of slick, squishy video game sounds as her constituent elements, Origami Girl’s world starts narrow on Spirit Bomb, but tends to constantly splash into new territory. New tempo potentialities, decontextualized samples and often grotesquely bright arrangements sit next to familiar sounds, avoiding nostalgia for a more progressive approach.
Whereas previous work has focused on extended environmental pieces, tracks like “Crystal Bandwitch”, “Clairvoyance” and “Silver Phantom” are short and sweet, giving just enough room to uncanny sample choices without losing any of the core directive. Fans of UK dance music will consistently find familiar motifs in Spirit Bomb, as will avid video game players, but Origami Girl offers a new vantage on recognizable themes, adding a new voice to the conversation in the process.
