Reflection by Stuart Richard Brown

It took me all of three hours to compose this and honestly, I never really expected it to work as a stand-alone piece: but it does. It's part of the backing music for a feature-length film. It needed to communicate a sense of sad and nostalgic memories, a certain feeling of loneliness and longing, and above all a dawning recognition of love. The music is scored for alto flute in G, piano and a small string orchestra. The alto flute has a tone like nothing else I know, languid and expressive, though playing it requires more breath than a conventional flute in C. There's nothing particularly clever about this music, it's just a plain, honest expression of emotions, written by a guy of seventy who wishes he'd made a bit more of his life. That's me.
