Midnight by Streetlight Cadence

“Midnight” is an acoustic rock album that blasts at its highest but calms down in its most intimate moments, bringing the listener through chapters that reveal an emotional journey as tumultuous and fulfilling as the 12-year history of Streetlight Cadence. Often described as a less traditional incarnation of The Avett Brothers, the band brings together these tunes from their roots as sidewalk performers, recorded by Pierre Grill in Honolulu, and mixed and mastered by Roy Silverstein (Rarefied Recording) and Reuben Cohen (Lurssen Mastering), respectively. Desiring to bring as acoustically raw of a sound as possible, “Midnight” was recorded as live single takes, capturing the nuances only achieved when you put violin, banjo, guitar, cello, accordion, double bass and a drum kit in the same room, playing at the same time. The vocals echo between pop-punk nostalgia and bluegrass harmonies, joining the instruments in a powerful and ambitious wall of sound, as if the listener were standing ten feet away from the musicians themselves.

Some highlights from the album include “Streetlights and Sirens”, an upbeat onslaught of acoustic energy that mirrors its story about a fatal car crash; “Great Unknown”, a folky jaunt about things that will never be; and “Learn to Love”, a melancholy yet hopeful ballad featuring longtime friend, Clara Stegall. Leading the album is “Thinking of You”, a fiddle breakdown-driven tune that was the very first original the band played for sidewalk spectators as teenagers in Honolulu.

In closing, “Midnight” brings a surprising and heartwarming spectacle that pays equal tribute to days before and days to come, in an epic display of inspired storytelling and genuine musicianship.
