A CONCEPTUAL RE-IMAGINING OF ENO’S ANOTHER GREEN WORLD

Spencer Owen's Denotation is a 24-minute cover version of the 1975 album Another Green World by Brian Eno. More specifically, it is a recorded suite comprising covers of, or references to, all 14 pieces from the original album, in their original sequence and original keys. In this way, it is intended to fully denote its primary referent's composition, structure and effect. It is also shaped by its creator's own set of tools, resources, stylistic templates, signs, limitations and approaches — not to mention the occasional employment of Brian Eno & Peter Schmidt's now-mythologized Oblique Strategies, used in the making of Another Green World.

Certain pieces are represented by a subtractive process and performed without overdubs on a solo Fender Rhodes electric piano. Others are re-arranged and interpreted from multiple perspectives and inspiration points, including: post(modernist) "art rock" (as exemplified by 1990s Chicago), reggae, musicians that appropriate reggae, underground balladry, "lo-fi" "indie rock," black metal, musicians that appropriate black metal, late 1960s/early 1970s American jazz, amateur ventriloquism, irreverently miniaturist song-craft, a wider view of Brian Eno's oeuvre as well as that of his associates and collaborators, the original Alien trilogy, and undoubtedly more.

Denotation was recorded by Spencer Owen on a Tascam cassette 8-track, on and around a lonely Christmas day in 2007. In the summer of 2015, it was remixed by Spencer Owen & Drew Stoeckel for its first ever release, acknowledging the 40th anniversary of Another Green World.
