when we realized that we were in the desert
we built a religion to worship thirst
we spoke to each other of a perfect oasis
then said that finding it was not our purpose
we made saints of those who could go on starving
when we bid farewell to the forgotten famine
those who closed their lips and felt no rain
and felt no pleasure through the joy of pain
"it's a door that doesn't open,"
we said of the archway
"it's a gate that doesn't close,"
we said of the vault
"it's a stairway to heaven,"
we said of the dead end
"it's our greatest virtue,"
we said of the fault
