Shipwreck by Steve Davis and Gaz Williams

Invited to perform at the 40th anniversary of the Brecon Jazz Festival in 2024, Steve Davis and Gaz Williams developed a fully improvised set for Brecon Cathedral—a space whose acoustics inspired and shaped their approach.
These recordings, made in the months beforehand, were not rehearsals in the conventional sense but explorations of possibility. Entirely improvised they reflect spontaneous electronic conversations in keeping with the Rack Records ethos.
Though recorded in studio, the pieces were composed with the cathedral's acoustics in mind-sparse textures and short decays allowing space for sound to bloom. A rehearsal in a church in Aberdare offered a valuable experience utilising a quadrophonic setup later used at the festival. While that spatial aspect cannot be recreated here, this stereo recording captures the core interplay and intent. No overdubs, no edits-just the sound as it happened.
