Lyrics
By the time that I left Woodstock
I was in over my head
I was wingin off to vast new vistas
Hadn't even yet heard the Dead
I was loosening my bonds
I was letting go my past
Was in a brotherhood of man
Things were moving fast
The mescalin and mud
Were movin through my veins
Everybody was high on something
Everybody was soaked with rain
Uh-oh wait a minute
How'm I gonna leave this spot
For uncles, aunts and grandparents
Visiting on Cape Cod
I was waiting at the circle
By the Sagamore Bridge
A car pulls up and in it
Are my Aunt Mickey and sister Lin
We saw this hippie, and figured
He was a Woodstock refugee
Never thought it would be you
What serendipity
We got back to my family
A warm and happy moment
My uncle says "My kids were wondering
What's the long hair represent"
Uh-oh pause a moment
What're you gonna say?
Is it the music, the movement, revolution?
... Drugs is what I said
That's right, not hugs... drugs
Four kids under twelve
And that is what I said
My uncle pulls me aside and says,
"If you ever say something like that again in front of these children, it's the last time you'll see them"
(pause)
I only wish he were here right now
So I could sing this song
Been 43 years since I was 18
I've held the feeling this long
Uh-oh wait a minute
Pause before you speak
A moment in history of vast new vistas
A moment later that's bleak
So remember my son
My eighteen year-old son
When you say something unkind
It'll be you who holds the memory
No one else will really mind

Comment:
The clear memories I carry become fewer with age. Once I wrote this one it didn't need to be carried any more. The last verse was serendipitous. It brought the past and present together.
