Entartete! by Andrew Greaves

“Entartete’ was the word coined by the Nazis for the arts they viewed as degenerate. The “Entartete Kunst” (degenerate arts) were suppressed, banned and many of the artists imprisoned. Gypsy, Jewish or African influences were ruled degenerate, as was the work of the gay community and anything radical or avant garde.

To modern ears and eyes, the suppression of some of the most vibrant and forward thinking creativity seems madness. But this fear of difference and of the new is still with us today. Newspaper headlines and the tweets of world leaders demonise single parents, the homeless, public services, non-western peoples, religions and even the victims of conflict.

An instrumental musician has limited options for directly addressing these issues, but hopefully by embracing the other and trying new directions is a step; Entartete!

“Bilawal Variant” was recorded in August 2017 and roughly based on the raga scale of the same name.

“Moved” was recorded on December 2017, using excerpts from a found cassette of Andrew’s father singing the traditional folk song “She Moved Through The Fair” from around 1991.

“Spacehopper’ was recorded in October 2017 and is duo performance with Gerald Eyton-Jones on drums.
