there's smoke in the air and it gets in my eyes
as i step carefully through the rubble
i hold out my hands in a balancing act
the sun's almost down and i'm too far from home

the rusting shell of an overturned truck
i can hear the violins on the wind
the footsteps have faded but echoes remain
in the empty dance halls i remember

the sunlight trickles down
through the rocks along the riverbank
i bend down to look
at the spark that's caught my eye

the broken-off tip of a phone charger cord
an entire life, held in my hands
til the breeze picked it up and reclaimed it
with only the atoms it had shed at my feet in the sand
