Offworld Sentience from Moontopia by Sounds of Space Project

This recording was produced by converting the radar echoes received by Huygens probe during the last few kilometres of its descent onto Titan into audible sound. As the probe approaches the ground, both the pitch and intensity increase. Scientists used the intensity of the echoes to speculate about the nature of the surface.

These 'sounds' are truly remarkable, as with so many of our tracks we could not make them up as beautifully. They encompass everything from the ticking of a clock, the sounds of how we might imagine sentient electronics, and a growing crescendo that is almost biblical, getting higher and higher in amplitude, pitch and phase until they simply cease to be. Cunio chose to play percussion with these sounds, using a series of gongs, rolls on bass drums and hands on timpani.

The artwork for "Offworld Sentience" is as weird and wonderful as the soundtrack. Scarborough has digitally layered her numerous enamel paint patterns that are then cropped into large circular moon or gong-like forms. Her design inspiration is ‘off-world party night’. Entanglements of colour and shadows with mists of purple and white are a visual nod to surreal sentience, one that she imagines exists in Titan moon space.

Titan, with a diameter of 5,100 km, is the largest moon of Saturn and the second largest moon in the solar system. It orbits Saturn at a distance of 1.2 million km, and is the only moon known to have an atmosphere denser than the Earth's. It is also the only known object in space, other than Earth, on which there is clear evidence that stable bodies of liquid exist.
