Lyrics
2 o'clock in the morning
Empty street
Searing heat
There's no-one around
A cat leaps from a nearby window
Jumps, then falls
You see the shadows
From those streetlights on the walls
Just walking along.
Nothing going on
you're just walking along
Shuffling feet
A guy steps out from the corner
Asks for a light
I say, there isn't any
It's the middle of the night
The guy is not amused
Thinks I'm taking the piss
Well maybe I am
Not much more to do on a night like this
He grabs me by the collar
He says, you want some man?
I say, I don't want any man
That's not the way that I am
For some reason this gets him a bit more angry
Well it's his problem not mine
But as time goes on
Appears to be my problem I find
I say, hey man
I'm just minding my own business here
What business you in?
I say, I'm walking
Business must be pretty thin, he says
What do you mean by that I say
He says, well look at you man
Your clothes are hanging off
I say, well it's the way I'm built.
People say to me in the shops
Sorry about the wait
I say, well I'm trying to eat more
But this goes over his head.
He says, I just asked for a light man
Give me a light
On this hot
Balmy
Night
And the cat wanders past
Remember the cat?
Yeah, he jumped from the balcony above.
So I shuffle about
I find my pocket
I get the lighter out
And...
He says, he says.....
You got a fag man?
I says, I thought we covered that misunderstanding we had a little while back
He says, No man, a cigarette
Why is he asking for a light when he hasn't even got a cigarette?
Who's taking the piss now
So I go to my other pocket,
Yeah, I have two
I'm that sort of guy
I get the cigarette out
He puts it in his mouth
And he cups his hand around my hand
As I light the cigarette
And I'm wary that his hands are quite...
Filthy
I don't know what he has been doing in that back alley
And I'm a bit concerned
Because, you know, I can't afford to get ill
I'm on holiday man, holiday.
So he smokes the cigarette and says,
Hey, you not gonna join me?
I didnt wanna go down that road again
So,
I light the cigarette
He says, man you know, you're OK
I say, yeah I am ok
I was ok until I met you
But I say nothing
Thanks man
What say we go somewhere?
What you got in mind?
He says, I know this place
I say, I know this place too
He says, no
I know this place
Where we can get some nice beer
Some nice women
And who knows what else.
I don't wanna be rude
So I walk
And he walks
And it's getting darker
And the roads are getting narrower
And we're heading towards this neon
Green
Blinking
Light
In the distance
I'm not sure I've seen this part of town before
This could be interesting
The light gets closer and closer
And the dark gets darker and darker
The light is shining brightly
Drawing me in
So we get to the door
And a weedy looking guy with a funny looking face says,
We've been waiting for you
Come on in
We descend the stairs
Theres some strange strange music
And a strange strange smell
Kind of sweet
Kind of sickly
People have their backs to us
And there's some some of music going on
But I cant make it ou......
Is it jazz?
Is it classic?
Is it...?
What is it?
And why is everyone facing towards the wall?
There's nothing on that wall
It's just a blank wall
Slowly they turn
Slowly
They turn
The guy who stopped me is now gone
It's just me
And these people
They turn
And I recognise the faces
They're all the same as me
They are me!
An army of me
In a hole in the ground
And no-one else around
On a dark dark night
With no, no light
Dark dark night
