A misty forest clearing
she stands within.
The golden dawn she greets
the birds her kin.
Spring awakens now though
snow yet crowns the mountain.
Landvættir she calls to
with horn and silver voice.
An offering she leaves
thanks she gives
to spirits of land and sky.
Returning warmth and life
after a winter bleak...
Answers...an echo.
Kulning- Kulning is a powerful and beautiful high piercing call that is summoned up from within the singer. No two calls are alike. It is a sound that can travel over long distances and was traditionally used by women since ancient times in Scandinavian countries to communicate with others and to call in their flocks and herds. It was especially useful in remote areas.
I believe they could also have used it to call to the land spirits. Kulning sounds especially haunting and magical when practiced in forests. The original environment of the song is outdoors, when practiced in the forest or across a valley a natural reverb and echo occurs. For the modern practitioner it helps connect to the past and present within nature and summons the singer’s individual power.

Deep forests cloaked in mist carpeted with moss, the harsh beauty of winter, cold starlight over windswept mountains, the joy of sunlight, dark nights and summer storms. The raw power of nature connects us to the wildness of our souls and a greater whole.
