Never twice the same colour
On phase-alternate lines I picked it up
Out of the blue

Out the window in the sky above my room
The tower where the signals nightly resumed
Emitted an eerie sort of hum

And even when I thought I was alone
There were the Bars and tone
(LIKE A DIPOLE SHOUTING DOWN A HOLE.)

Signals come and signals go
Some will change it to a different show
But late one night on a vacant channel
I found the answer to my problem
Truth in lines! Truth in numbers!
Fear of dots Fear of people
And even when we all are gone
The bars and tone go on

And everything I thought was really there
Was electric waves passing through the air
Like a dipole shouting down a hole
