Some Kitchen by Slouching Sparrows

Almost all of my songs start in the kitchen, these songs included. There's something about the kitchen that feels so social and yet so quiet, so ripe for creativity. Plus the acoustics are usually fairly good, which helps.

The majority of songs on this album were recorded in early 2025, the first being penned and even recorded late in 2024. American Song I wrote in November last year and, not having any decent cassettes around, recorded onto a crusty old C-90. I thought it would be unusable, but in the end I liked how it came out. The rest of the songs I wrote in very short succession and then set about trying to record them. I still don't really know what I'm doing, which is fairly apparent on this record, and these songs took a long time to put together. They're by no means perfect. In fact, they're very rough and messy and fairly inconsistent, but I hope that in some way the songs can shine through the low fidelity and stand alone as they are.

The longest of these songs comes in at around 8 minutes, a lengthy ballad about a corrupt billionaire. It doesn't take a genius to work out who that is. The shortest songs are only a couple of minutes, but they all consider a state of unrest and dissatisfaction, concluding with the title song "Some Kitchen", dedicated to all the kitchens I've written and recorded in all over the world - my resting song, if you will. "American Song" is the most absurd of these, it being about a fly I saw land on a pizza at a pizza place in New York, but the pizza was so good I ate it anyway and as I sat there came up with some ludicrous story about this fly living a kind of sad existence, and yet embodying the modern American dream and all it's humanistic flaws - the fly become human-fly. "Another Town In The Sixties" is a nihilistic song about how things have always been fairly hopeless and now is no exception, "Chancery Lane" explores the pursuit of creativity and the inevitable falling among the ranks of the defeated academics, "Waxwork Girls" is about the men and women who seem to appear on the faces of all the magazines, "Audrey Horne" is a metaphor for persistent creativity, and the rest are just fairly bitter songs about people.

You'll also hear a few radio clips throughout the album. I lifted these from a couple of old tapes I found, all recorded in the late 80s and early 90s in Australia and the US. I thought they fit the album nicely, and some of them were too hilarious to leave out. The nipple rubbing dance of love?!

I hope you find some enjoyment in these. They were fun to make, they were very painful to make. It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times.
