Lyrics
Over and over, like a song stuck in our head,
Blocks out our own thoughts, with prescribed ones instead,
Fables that guide us, just a simple set of rules,
Helping all to find their way, giving us the needed tools.
Do we hear what we want to, choose the bits we like the best,
Justify our intentions, driven by our self-interest.
We all know the tune now, some know the words by heart,
Some just hum along, do the dance, and look the part,
Some sing much louder, with new words they modify,
They speed up the tempo, hoping to intensify,
Do we hear what we want to, imagine all that is divine,
Soften harsh realities, pull the wayward back in line.
It’s still the same song, though the lyrics now have changed,
It sounds so familiar, just the words are rearranged,
It’s still the same song, but it’s meant for different ears,
We keep on dancing, doesn’t matter what we hear.
Sounds like our neighbor, does a version somewhat odd,
We can’t make the words out, we assume a dark facade,
Plagiarized or all made up, by sacrilegious banging heads,
Their passion still burns the same, and so easily mislead.
Do we hear what we want to, misinterpret as we need,
We can make up our own verse, if we don’t like how they read.
It’s still the same song, though the lyrics now have changed,
It sounds so familiar, just the words are rearranged,
It’s still the same song, but it’s meant for different ears,
We keep on dancing, doesn’t matter what we hear.
