Athletics EP by Sebastian Reynolds
A life-long lover of athletics and keen amateur middle-distance runner it was only a matter of time before Sebastian’s great passion came to directly inspire his creative output. Lead single Cheptegei was inspired by the superstar Ugandan runner Joshua Cheptegei’s record-breaking 5000M run in Monaco in August 2020. A fittingly jubilant affair featuring joyous saxophones from acclaimed reeds man Peter Fraser as well as guitar and bass from Jody Prewett and percussion and synths from drummer and producer Greig Stewart (ex-Guillemots), and commentary samples from running legends Tim Hutchings and Steve Cram. Final Push follows with its hallucinatory soundscape breaking out into pirouetting distorted synths and Greig’s crashing drums evoking the altered states and aggressive chaos of the Final Push of a race. Other more mellow pieces include the ambient drone piece Start Line and the EP closer Four-minute mile, which pays tribute to Sir Roger Bannister’s record-breaking run in Oxford in 1954 and references Vangelis’ classic Chariots of Fire. Dominance Hierarchy is a punchy electronica paen to the psychology of self-betterment.
