Christmas Eve from Tascam by Sebastian Handley
A song I started writing in 2001 while I was living in Koln, Germany. I was rushing about on Christmas eve when suddenly, at about midday the whole town suddenly shut down and I found myself standing in an empty square wondering why, on the busiest shopping day of the year, the whole place had become a ghost town, then I realised of course…’now it is time for peace and quiet’. I carried on working on the song sporadically but it wasn’t till 2010 that I was happy with all the words. It wasn’t really a song for the Chandeliers to record so instead every Christmas I would try to record a version on my phone to put on faceboook, but the results were excruciating - it is actually a real awkward composition to record in terms of melody and tempo. I finally nailed it for the Tascam project but I had to record it about 90 times before I got a version that I was happy with. If I played it another 100 times I could never do another take as good as this recording, its perfect. So finally, after many years and much work this simple little song is done. Christmas is when people come together, but often people who we would like to pass time with again can’t be there, this song wishes those people well.
