Jouissance (French for ‘enjoyment’ or gratification) is a term coined by the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. For him, jouissance - in contrast to lust and desire - stands for the immediate satisfaction of sexual needs in particular. It belongs to the realm of the real as an ‘idiotic’, dull, meaningless form of gratification.
