People's Republic by Scattered Order
“The People’s Republic of Australasia has been hosting occasional private invitation-only performances of (mostly) experimental and improvised music in Sydney’s Inner West for close to 15 years. I curate and operate most things to do with the Republic, and I’ve been a fan of Scattered Order and all things M Squared ever since buying their first EP when a naïve and ignorant first year student back in 1981.
So I was thrilled when Shane contacted me in October 2023 to ask if we could host a second SO show (the first had been ten years earlier) at the Republic to showcase their new album “All things must persist”. Invitations were sent, the audience list compiled, technical specifications prepared for our new space in a converted church hall. And then five days before the gig was to take place, we heard the dreadful news that Michael Tee had passed away that morning.
It was an act of great love and courage that Mitch and Shane decided to go ahead with the performance as a tribute to Michael and the more than 40 years they’d been making music together. The SO family and community responded overwhelmingly and filled the hall for a performance which no one there will forget, as ever enhanced by wonderful specially prepared visuals from LIVING SCIENCE Dept.
The People’s Republic has always been an initiative which has as its highest priority a sense of community among artists and audience. This show by SO was the very embodiment of what we’re all about. Thanks to Mitch and Shane for a stunning performance, to Colum for the projections, to Matt McGuigan for the beautiful sound on the night, and Peter Hollo for a stunning support set.
And thanks to Michael Tee for more than four decades of fascinating, compelling and inspiring music.”
