The distinction is scratched into the soil. Improvisation is always making a new mark, scratching again. Boots on the ground and hooves in the mud.
The same process every time but, for those attuned to this music, a different outcome every time. Sometimes good or bad, sometimes great. Working together means another set of differences, a constant scratching between the distinction and sameness of two or more players.
For me, this music is always about creating a certain energy. It might be a volatile energy or a calm one. There has to be a certain time allowed for that to become apparent. Personally, what I prize most is when the energy is ambivalent, not through confusion, but because it isn't quite clear what the mood or feel is. A sustained suspense. Perhaps the cat scratches the pigeons, but that sort of ambivalence has a ritualistic or sacred character for me. After all, the sacred is what is removed but related; a proximate distance.
Scratch a line in the earth; the sacred is always on the other side of that line.
