The title 'Musicking' was inadvertently suggested by my father.
He had a habit of ‘verbing’ quite unexpected words (asking a piano playing friend of mine if she was still ‘pianisting’ was a particularly memorable example).
For many years I had thought this was something quite particular to him until last year, while visiting my hometown of Louth, an old school acquaintance asked me if I was still ‘musicking’.
Later I discovered that the musicologist Christopher Small had used the word ‘musicking’ to emphasise that music is a process not an object, an idea that seems particularly appropriate to the practice of musical improvisation.
